Your feet
are the foundation for the rest of your body. For that reason, your general
health is greatly dependent on the condition of your feet.
Each foot
in the human body has 26 bones. Fourteen of the 26 bones are toe bones. Your
big toe has only two bones, while the rest of your toes have three. In most
people , the big toe is the longest, but in some, the second toe is the
longest.
The soles, or bottoms, of the feet
contain more sweat glands than the other parts of your body. The soles also
have many nerves. They have more pressure- sensitive nerve endings per square
centimeter than any other part of your body.
Normally,
the feet are arched. That is , the top of the foot has a downward curve. These
curves ,or arches, help the feet support the heavy weight of the body. The
arches also act like a spring. They help us jump, walk, and run.
In some
people, the bottoms of the feet are flat rather than arched. Flat feet can be
perfectly normal and healthy. In fact, people with flat feet can stand on their
feet for longer periods of time than those with higher arches. This is because
the weight on flat feet is distributed over a large area.
Some
people believe that lower backaches, headaches, and stomachaches can often be
caused by foot problems. These people believe that such problems can be cured
by rubbing the feet, or strengthening the muscles in the feet through exercise.
A doctor
can examine you and tell you what needs to be done to improve your feet. A
podiatrist can also help with foot problems; a podiatrist is a foot specialist.
Podiatrists are not medical doctors, but they have taken a special course in
caring for foot problems. They
can tell if your shoes are properly designed, and provide you with specially
shaped inserts to put inside your shoes. These inserts will help support the
arches of your feet and make your shoes more comfortable.
