The Fire

During the past several years, the number of deaths caused by fires in the home has decreased. This is partly due to the increased use of smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are electronic devices that sound an alarm if any smoke reaches them. However, fires still kill many people in the home. Over 75% of all fire deaths occur in the home.
During the past ten years, the use of smoke detectors has increased greatly. Today, most home fires happen in homes that do not have a smoke detector. Less than 25% of all home fires happen in the homes with a smoke detector.
Smoke detectors reduce fire deaths by speeding up the discovery of a fire. Recent studies show that smoke detectors cut the risk of fire deaths by 25%.
Children and older people are often not able to react correctly in a fire emergency. They either do nothing or do the wrong thing. It is not surprising, then, that persons aged 75and over have the highest rate of home fire deaths. Persons aged 5 and under have the next highest rate.
Those 75 and over have the highest rate of fire deaths of any group from heating, cooking, and electrical fires, and from fires caused by smoking. About 34% of the victims in this age group helped start the fire that killed them, compared to 19% for all age groups. Over 18% of all fire victims are bedridden, meaning, they are too sick or too weak to leave their beds. Burning clothes play a part in 15% of fire deaths.
Many of the fires that kill children are those which the children start themselves by playing with matches or lighters. 30% of fire victims  aged 5 or younger are killed in this type of fire. Even for children just 2 years or younger, 14% are closely involved in starting the fire that kills them.
